Liberty Chapel Cemetery is a well-kept active cemetery located approximately 3.5 miles north of Carthage on Highway 79 just north of the Jim Reeves Memorial and directly behind Liberty Chapel Church (1766 US-79 N). The land for the cemetery was donated by Richard Ormand Respess who taught school at Frog Pond School in the 1870's which is the current location of Liberty Chapel Church. The cemetery was originally developed as a burial place for his direct descendants as well as other members of the church. Today, if you have family members currently buried here, you are considered a member. The first person buried at Liberty Chapel Cemetery was John C Anderson in 1880 and the most recent in 2021. There are several graves marked by angel statues, no name, no date, as well as a number of unmarked graves. There were many people, in some cases entire families, who died in the early 1900s of influenza. Spanish flu, also known as the Great Influenza epidemic or the 1918 influenza pandemic. There are approximately 250 persons interred here.

The cemetery is governed by a Board of Directors and operated by an elected President and Secretary/Treasurer. Each year, at 11am on the first Saturday in May, a "graveyard working" is held under the pavilion at the cemetery. Years ago, people would bring hoes and rakes, the ladies would cook a dish, and everyone pitched in to clean up the cemetery then have lunch. These days we pay a groundskeeper to maintain the cemetery throughout the year but we still meet under the pavilion and have lunch. It's a family style buffet where everyone brings a dish. There are normally between 35 to 50 people in attendance and it is open to all so please come, we would love to meet you! At that time, we visit the graves of our relatives and put out flowers for them, if so desired, as well as catch up with those distant and close relatives who are still with us. Since the cemetery is operated through the monetary donations of its members, updates are given for burials and sales as well as expenses incurred over the preceding year. Donations are accepted at this time as well as by mail throughout the year.
