The church and its 2 burial grounds are located within Thingvellir National Park. This is about a one hour drive North East of Reykjavik.
There has been a church on this spot since around 1015 after Iceland was converted to Christianity. The timber for the church is said to have been given to the Althingi by King Olaf of Norway so that when Icelanders gathered at Þingvellir every year they could see how a church looked and be taught how to perform the service. The king also sent a big bell with the timber. This church was destroyed in a storm in 1118 and rebuilt several times. The present church was built in 1859.
The three bells in the belfry include one from 1698 and one which was added on 17th of June, 1944, when the Icelandic Republic was proclaimed on the Parliamentary Plains. The first bell given by King Olaf and the second bell given by the next Norwegian king, king Harald, were melted down to make a new bell in 1593.
Along with the old cemetery in front of the church, there is a round shape "honors" cemetery which was consecrated behind the church in 1939. This was supposed to be the final resting place of important Icelanders, presidents, poets and artists. Only 2 poets have been buried there as the families of others who were eligible to be buried there did not wish the honor, mostly due to distance.
The church is an active community church with about 30 members. In the months of June, July and August, the Lutheran mass is celebrated Sunday at 14:00. Otherwise, services are held only once a month.
