The Church of Saint Peter the Apostle stands on a very ancient site, set back partly behind the shops of St Peter's Street, the main thoroughfare of Canterbury. Fragments of Roman tiles and masonry have often been found on the site, some of which can be seen incorporated into the tower. The main building dates from the 13th century, although two major restorations in Victorian times have changed the interior considerably. The tower was built about 1100 and houses four bells, dated 1325, 1430, 1599 and 1637. The church has strong associations with the French Huguenot refugees who came to the City to escape persecution in the 1690s; many are buried in the small, completely enclosed churchyard. Almost directly opposite the church is another St Peter's, St Peter's Methodist Church, built in 1811.
