In 1125, St Peter's was given to Carmarthen Priory who owned it throughout the Middle Ages. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote that Merlin's mother used to live with the nuns at St Peter's church in Carmarthen.
The current church dates from the 13th century with later additions in the 15th and 16th centuries. It was restored from 2000 - 2002 at a cost of over a million pounds. St Peter's is the largest church in the Diocese of St David's and contains a large number of important tombs and memorials.
