St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard
Also known as Trelystan Churchyard
Trelystan, Powys, Wales
Most of the interior of this church dates to the nineteenth century restoration. However, the early arch braced timber roof survives, the walls are boarded with parts of old box pews and the flagstone floor incorporates seventeenth and eighteenth century memorial slabs at the east end. Furthermore there is a Perpendicular style octagonal font, and a five-light fragment of the medieval rood screen. The church consists of a single-cell nave and chancel, south porch, weatherboarded bellcote with pyramidal roof and continuous louvers, and north vestry.
The church is located in the hills approximately 4 miles south east of Welshpool. To approach it from Welshpool, cross the Severn Valley by the B4381, turn right into the B4388 to Forden and Montgomery & after about .3 of a mile turn left onto the minor road which leads to Leighton Church. Proceed past the church gates on the right and up the steep Bank. After 2 miles there is a crossroads at the top of the mountain. Keep going straight and into a straight downhill section. The church is located on a track on the left-hand side about half a mile from The Crossroads.
The Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society transcribed the churchyard from 1997-2000.
