This cemetery is located in Boldixum, now a district of Wyk, which is a municipality on the island of Föhr, in the district of Nordfriesland, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Many of the old Frisian houses used to belong to sea captains who had made a fortune as whalers on Dutch ships. It was a hard and dangerous work which claimed a lot of lives.
This is one of the three cemeteries on the island of Föhr that surrounds an old Gothic and Baroque church building, this one dedicated to St. Nikolas. The cemetery is located between the villages of Boldixum and Wrixum. At some point it was called "Friedhof Boldixum". The church itself dates back to the year 1270. The altar inside the church was created in 1643 by a carver named Johannes Schnitger.
There is also a section of honorary graves for those killed during the two world wars.
And there is a historical section with grave stones dating back to the early 18th century, known as Talking Gravemarkers: markers with biographical information about the diseased. This historic photo shows what the cemetery looked like in 1895.

This is one of three old Gothic churches on the island of Föhr; those and their respectiv historic cemeteries are:
Sankt-Johannis-Friedhof (Friedhof Nieblum)
Sankt-Laurentii-Friedhof (Friedhof Süderende)
Sankt-Nicolai-Friedhof (Friedhof Wyk)
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever. The historic graves in this cemetery are kept and maintained by the village.
