Irishtown was established by Irish settlers in 1820. The first church was a small log one bulit in 1829 and the oldest gravestone in the cemetery is William O'Neill's, dated 1847. The current church opened in 1861, under the patronage of St. Lawrence O'Toole, Dublin's 12th century bishop. Pews were added in 1874. The parish was originally a misson of Memramcook but in 1860 it wa transferred to St. Anselme. In 1920 Saint Bernard's Parish became the Mother church. From 1938 to 1941 the parish was a mission of St. Louis de France in Lewisville, so the church had two masses per visit, which was at least once a month. From 1941 to 1946 the church was under Saint Bernard's care. In 1946 Irishtown became a separate parish, joining with Saint-Philippe's mission.

Today, the community and parish are linguistically blended and mass has been bilingual since 1997.

This is the oldest Irish Catholic parish in Westmorland and Albert counties. The only other Irish parish that pre-dates it is St. Patrick's In Chapel Point, NB.

Note: In the 1960s, Irishtown Road was widened and the front row of monuments was removed. It is not known what happened to these, though they may have been relocated within the cemetery.
