Cemetery notes and/or description:
Ross Bay Cemetery opened in 1872 and at 11 hectares (27.5 acres) is one of Canada's oldest and largest surviving Victorian cemeteries.. It overlooks Ross Bay and has quiet, parklike setting with winding carriageways and a formal landscape design which includes pine trees, Spanish Fir, Rocky Mountain white fir and cork-bark elm and Japanese flowering cherries. Until 1911 the cemetery extended all the way to the beach of Ross Bay but violent storms washed away much of the shoreline (and graves) and so a concrete sea wall was built. There have also been some monument transfers into the cemetery from the Old Burying Ground (Pioneer Square), the Songhees Indian Reserve and St. Ann's Academy. In 2013 markers were added to show the location of sections, row and plot numbers. Burial Records 1872-1980 are online at the City of Victoria Archives
