The cemetery was originally a part of the huge estate of Moses Shepherd of Elm Grove. For many years it functioned only as a graveyard, but in October 1865 Charles DeHass surveyed and laid out the cemetery site.
Stone Church Cemetery is the final resting place of many prominent figures in the Wheeling's history, including 19 Revolutionary War patriots. Among the patriots are two Revolutionary War colonels (David Shepherd and Moses C. Chapline) and two patriots who rose to the rank of colonel in the War of 1812 (Moses Shepherd and Archibald Woods).
Other notable figures in Wheeling's history buried in this cemetery include James Vance, Archibald McDonald, Ann Pogue Woods, John J. Woods, William Shepherd, Francis Duke, John Mills, Lydia Boggs Shepherd Cruger, Francis Boggs, and Mary Caldwell Chapline.
The cemetery, now owned by the City of Wheeling, remains an active burial place. Historical information on the cemetery may be found at the Ohio County Public Library in Wheeling, West Virginia or from the Wheeling Area Genealogical Society.
