This is a military cemetery, established in the 17th century, to contain the graves of the pensioners who lived out the remainder of their lives in The Royal Hospital.
It is located in the area known as "Bully's Acre", which was a burial area for Dublin up until the 1830's.
The Royal Hospital was established in 1680, during the reign of Charles 2nd, but the present building was erected in the early 19th century. Substantial renovations were carried out in the 1990's.
The marker flag, noted on the accompanying map, has been put at the entrance point to the two parts of the cemetery.
The Officers Plots are to the south.
The Other Ranks Plots are to the north.
7 graves are for some of those British Army soldiers killed in the Easter Rising, 1916, and are located in the North West corner of the ordinary soldiers section, close to the junction of St. John's Road West/Con Colbert Road and the South Circular Road.
The gates to the northern section (other ranks) are usually kept open.
The gates to the southern section (officers) are usually kept locked.
