The church is dedicated to St Mawgan and St Nicholas. The 'new' cruciform church was built in about 1240 AD, although there had been a building used for worship on the site since about 550 AD. The Lady Chapel, almost the size of the main church, was added in the 1430s, as was the tower, unusually placed at the south, which has eight bells. These works were funded by the wealthy local Arundell family. In the 1850s and 1860s extensive restoration work was carried out by eminent Victorian architect William Butterfield, who added the vestry and designed the lych-gate and the Old Rectory and village school. There is a Holy Well by the lych-gate, and two plain wheel crosses in the memorial rose garden, one from near Truro, one removed during the construction of nearby St Mawgan RAF Station in 1942. Near the porch there is also a medieval lantern cross, one of only three that survive in Cornwall. (Text by Sheilia W.)
