The cemetery was established in the 1820s when the settlement to its immediate north was named Letimberville. The "Kirkpatrick" name was applied to the community in the late 1800s - Letimberville is now a name consigned to history books and is not used in conjunction with the graveyard. Burials in the cemetery continued through 1900, however the number of burials decreased over the years to a trickle by WWII. Today, burials are rarely, if ever held.
Kirkpatrick Cemetery is laid out in rows, parallel to State Route 98. The grounds were fenced through the 1980s, however the fencing was removed to facilitate mowing equipment. The cemetery is well tended and is under the care of the Scott Township Trustees.
The majority of stones are sandstone and marble, with a smattering of granite stone markers. Older stones prior to the introduction of granite markers in the late 19th century are beginning to decline because of weather/wind erosion and mold/mildew/lichen growths. There are no formal lots. A historical map of the cemetery is not known to exist.
The cemetery has been walked for enumeration on at least two occasions that resulted in published results. Once in the 1950s by Elsie Ewing Rayburn, who performed a limited tabulation for a Daughters of the American Revolution project. The most recent organized walking was in 1979 by Paul and Barbara Midlam for their book, Tombstone Inscriptions of Marion County, Ohio. This resulted resulted in an alphabetical listing for graves up to 1908, unless the stone was amended to include post 1908 burials, and/or the placement of a new stones for an older burial was erected.
