Sometime between the years of 1865 and 1869, God in His love and wisdom touched the hearts of eight men and women. Through constant prayer and working daily for their Master and Lord, they succeeded in organizing and founding a church. The names of the founders of the Jackson Missionary Baptist church are as follows: Sim Conner, William h. Beard Sr., Miss Sara Conner Smoak, Auniss Smoak, Mrs. Julia Conner Brooker, Press Brooker, Mrs. Press Brooker, and Mrs. Nan Conner Brooker.
They had no church building in which to worship and for some time they worshipped in an old residence one mile south of the present church. It is said that President George Washington spent the night in the house when he visited Screven County. It was known as the Brown House. In the year 1870, on December 10, with love, William H, Beard Sr. opened his generous heart and gave two and one quarter acres of land to be used as a Missionary Baptist Church and cemetery, thus being a portion of his home place, located ten miles east of Sylvania on the old Savannah and Augusta Stage Road at the 57 mile post. The first sermon to be preached at Jackson Baptist Church was in the Brown House by the Rev. C. E. Barefield, on November 19, 1870. His text was taken from the 11th chapter of Hebrews.
A church was finally erected on the lot known as Church No. 1 There were rules of Christian belief adopted by the church that the first day of the week was to be kept sacred to religious purposes and several other rules of Christian belief were to be kept.
The Presbytery of the first church included the Rev. G. L. Jackson, in whose honor the church was named; the Rev. M. N. McCall and the Rev. C. E. Barefield.
The present church, known as Church No. 2 was built by Alf Bryant, contractor in the year 1890. John Edenfield, a deacon of the church, financed the contractor's salary. They dedicated this church the fifth Sunday March, 1891. The dedication sermon was preached by Rev. J. M. Cross. His text was taken from 1 Corinthians 2:2.
