Foujita Chapel
Also known as: Chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace
33 Rue du Champ de Mars
Reims
Departement de la Marne
Champagne-Ardenne  France

Cemetery notes and/or description:

The Chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace, better known as the Foujita Chapel, sits at the back of a 2-acre enclosure facing the Rue du Champ de Mars in Reims, France. It was conceived by Japanese-born French artist Leonard Foujita, a convert to Catholicism, and financed by his godfather, champagne maker Rene Lalou (CEO of the House of Mumm). Foujita designed the Romanesque architecture, stained glass windows, sculptures, ironwork, and the stone walkway leading to the entrance, and supervised its construction in the garden of the Mumm estate, beginning in 1965. He painted the interior wall frescoes himself over the Summer of 1966, when he was 80. A commemorative plaque reads in part: "Leonard Foujita covered this 1966 chapel's entire interior with frescoes in memory of his baptism in Reims. The lavish artwork includes Our Lady of the Grape Harvest in honor of the Virgin Mary, who was a particular focus of devotion in Champagne". The building was consecrated as the Chapel of Our Lady Queen of Peace on October 1, 1966. On October 18, Lalou and Foujita donated the chapel and grounds to the City of Reims, which maintains it as a museum. The French government declared it an historic monument in 1992. The Foujita Chapel is open for guided tours from May 2 to October 31 of each year, six days a week from 2 to 6 pm. Closed Wednesdays and on July 14. Photography is not permitted inside the chapel.
