Rather Cemetery
Smith County, Texas, USA
The Rather Cemetery is situated on land that was once part of the Rather Plantation of James and Lucinda Rather. They and their family were important landowners in southern Smith County and northern Cherokee County from about 1850-1930. The exact location of their plantation and associated buildings is unknown, but information from the Rather Family section of the book, Bullard, It's History And People, Vol. 1, indicates it to have been near the cemetery.
The cemetery is of important historical significance to the local area. Buried in the cemetery is the namesake of the nearby town of Flint, Robert P. Flynt as well as multiple veterans of the Civil War and at least one veteran of the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. The Flynt and Oglesby families were important to the formation of Flint and Samuel Clampitt Oglesby and his wife Mollie, both buried in the Rather Cemetery, donated the land where the current Flint Cemetery is now. Before their donation of land for the Flint Cemetery, most burials in this area occurred at the Rather Cemetery. Also, it is worth mentioning, that just about 75 feet due east into the woods from the Rather Cemetery, is the Bowie Cemetery, a Black cemetery, currently not maintained.
