Many of the pioneer settlers of Kentucky were Revolutionary War and War of 1812 veterans. Most of the pioneer settlers of Sunfish, Kentucky trace their origins to the early Catholic settlers of Madison County and the Pottinger's Creek settlements of Nelson County. They were of European/English descent and emigrated to Kentucky, primarily from Maryland. The names of the early setters included Davies, Durbin, Logsdon, Nash, Miller, and Woosley. The Durbin's and Logsdon's originally settled in Madison County and migrated to Sunfish around 1820. The first Catholic Church in Sunfish was built in 1850 behind the present St. John's church, located on the East side of Bear Creek.
A survey plot map from 1986 did not divide the cemetery into sections, number the rows, nor number the grave plots. The visual photographic survey from November, 2013 adds sections, rows and plot numbers to an updated plot map. The descriptions of the different sections of the cemetery are referenced from the viewpoint of someone standing directly behind the church, facing the cemetery.
Section A is on the right hand side of the road. This is the "old section" of the cemetery. There are 47 field stones that are assumed to be grave markers in this section. There is also a lot of blank space between the existing tombstones. It is accepted belief that the "open space" is occupied, but unmarked. A conservative estimate would be that there are 100 or more unmarked graves in the old section of the cemetery. Section A is assumed to be full and is not used for new burials.
Section B is on the left side of the road. This area is used for new graves. It is at about 50% capacity at this time.
Section C is to the far left of Section B and is reserved for future use.
Slave Burials were on the far right, outside the fence, in the field beside the cemetery. This information was related to me in stories I heard as a small kid in the early 1950's. There are some individuals that place the slave burials outside the back fence. Only a ground mapping forensic survey would determine the location for sure.
