A Cistercian house at Conwy, the most important abbey in Wales during the 13th century. It was founded at Rhedynog Felen near Caermarfon in 1186 by monks from the Strata Florida Abbey in Ceredigion, Wales, and moved to Conwy in 1199 when they were given land grants by Llywelyn the Great. He was considered to be its founder, and contributed over 40,000 acres to the abbey. The abbey was reconstructed in Maenan by 1284 as King Edward built a walled city and castle in its stead. Meanan is now ruins, and the original church in Conwy is now the parish church.
