Friends Meeting House
Location: Paint Township
Remarks: Here was located Fall Creek Monthly Meeting. This meeeting was set off from Fairfield Monthly Meeting on May 11, 1811, but the Friends in this vicinity had organized and built a church by the site of this cemetery on the Spargur Mill Road in 1807 - 1808. The church was of hewed logs and consisted of two rooms, each forty foot square. After the Hicksite secession of 1828, the Hicksites, who were in the majority, remained here until around the year 1835, when they built a church on the Anderson State Road by the site of what is known today as the Hicksite Cemetery. They flourished a few years there and then disbanded, going to another meeting. The orthodox branch having withdrawn built a church further up the road and in 1876, erected a new church on the Anderson State Road. Today meetings are held in this church.
On June 17, 1819, in Transcribed Book 6, page 96, Highland County Deed Records, by indenture, Bowater Sumner and Rebecca, his wife conveyed five and three-quarter acres to Gorman Ballard and John Vanpelt, Trustees appointed by the Society of Friends of Fall Creek Particular Monthly Meeting "for the benefit and use of the Society of Friends aforesaid."
Old newspapers refer to this cemetery as Friends Meeting House, Old Quaker, Orthodox, Lower Quaker and Lower Fall Creek. For further remarks refer to Hicksite Cemetery, this township. All stones copied.
The cemetery is located in Paint Township, Highland County, Ohio, and is # 5304 (Friends Meeting House Cemetery / Lower Fall Creek Cemetery / Lower Quaker Cemetery / Old Quaker Cemetery / Orthodox Cemetery / Friends Cemetery) and # 14641 (Old Stringtown Cemetery) in "Ohio Cemeteries 1803-2003", compiled by the Ohio Genealogical Society.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) feature ID for the cemetery is 1040685 (Friends Cemetery).
