The cemetery is owned and operated by the Catholic parishes of Evansville. The cemetery began operation in 1841northeast of Evansville in an area now bounded by Columbia, Michigan, and Gavin Streets. In 1872, the present cemetery site was ready for burials. By 1879, all of the burials in the original site had been moved to the present site. The cemetery office is open 7:30 am – 3:30 pm Monday-Friday and 7:30 am – Noon on Saturday.

The cemetery is located in Perry Township (NW quadrant of Section 14 Township 6S Range 11W and NE quadrant of section 15 Township 6S Range 11W) on the west side of Mesker Park Drive about 0.2 miles south of its intersection with W Diamond Avenue (Indiana State Highway 66).

Indiana Cemetery Locations, Volume 4, published by the Indiana Genealogical Society (April 2009), gives the primary cemetery name as Saint Joseph Cemetery.
