In early 1847 the business community and clergy of Sillery held a meeting to discuss the establishment of a new cemetery. This led to the creation of the Quebec Protestant Cemetery Association and the new cemetery was registered May 30, 1849. The official name given at that time was "Mount Hermon," named for the sacred mountain situated on the border between Lebanon and Syria, north of Israel. The sign at the entrance reads "Visitors are reminded that these Grounds are appropriated for the Interment of the Dead, and that a strict observance of the proprieties due to the place is therefore indispensable."
The cemetery administration has gone through and taken digital photos of all the headstones. They can be contacted by phone or via email.
The index and burial register of Mount Hermon Cemetery (1848-1950) were microfilmed in 1989 by the National Archives of Quebec (Microfilming Project M211/1) and is available in the room (ZQ115). . . . the National Archives of Quebec put online on September 24, 2004 a database including all information relating to the 8,795 deceased recorded in the cemetery registers between 1848 and 1904 inclusive. To the 6,164 entries noted by Mr. Dorval during the preparation of his master's thesis (The geography of mortality in Quebec in the 19th century: the case of the Protestants buried in the Mount Hermon cemetery, Sillery, 1848-1883, Memory presented for the obtaining the degree of master of arts (M.A.), Laval University, 1992) were added nearly 2,606 additional entries compiled by Ms. Helen Langford, a student employed by the National Archives of Quebec in the summer of 2004. Subsequently , two other students, Holly Miller and Nikita Tetarenko, completed the database until the end of the register in 1950. With this update, the database now has 13,291 entries."
