Seestraße 92-93
13347 Berlin
Originally established in 1859 to bury the deceased patients of the Charite Hospital who had no relatives, that would claim the bodies. In 1906 it became part of the city run cemetery association and is being used solely for urne burials. The area was inlarged in 1920, and a funeral hall was added. There is a section of 295 graves of victims of the Nazi Regime, who were either killed in concentration camps or murdered at Plötzensee Prison. It also has a memorial site of The Uprising of 1953 in East Germany, with the graves of 11 victims.
The cemetery now has the size of 52,602 square meters, or 13 acres.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years.
War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
