|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The former St. Mary's cemetery (1879-1910) which was renamed St. Thomas's cemetery, associated with the St. Thomas Aquinas Cathedral (1910-1963). In 1963 the St. Thomas cemetery was closed and the graves moved to Our Mother of Sorrows. Although the cemetery knows where all the graves are from St. Thomas, many of them do not have headstones (only those families who paid additional fees had the remains re-interred in regular sized plots that could accommodate upright headstones. Those without a family to pay the extra costs were put in small 2'x2' boxes that would accommodate only a gravemarker. If these individuals had a headstone it was left behind and no one is quite sure where they ended up; however, they were in some fashion disposed of as the cemetery property was taken under eminent domain by the University of Nevada and developed as the site of a student housing/dining complex. Rumor is that they were put in some canyon and that periodically one shows up and the sheriff will bring it to Our Mother of Sorrows Cemetery.
