Composer. The older brother of composer William Lawes, he was a gentleman of England's Royal Chapel from 1626 until King Charles I was deposed and executed in 1649. He resumed his position after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Lawes was the most prolific English songwriter of his time; over 450 of his songs survive. He was particularly admired by poet John Milton, who wrote a sonnet in his honor and asked him to provide the music for his verse drama "Comus" (1634). Lawes published much of his work in three volumes called "Dialogues for Voices" (1653 to 1658). His best known songs are noted for their tunefulness and invention.
