German royalty. Born Princess Anna Maria Maximiliane Stephania Karoline Johanna Luisa Xaveria Nepomucena Aloysia Benedicta von Sachsen, the seventh child of King Johann and Queen Amalia of Saxony The king and his brother-in-law Leopold II of Tuscany decided early that Leopold's eldest son should marry a Saxon princess. The couple first met in 1854 and was married two years later in Dresden. Their first child was born in 1858 and was named Maria Antonia after Ferdinand's mother. The Grand Princess of Tuscany died while giving birth to a stillborn daughter. Two months after her death Ferdinand succeeded his father Leopold II as Grand Duke of Tuscany. Her heart is interred in the Chiesa Santa Chiara in Naples, and her body was buried at San Lorenzo in Florence.
