Orene attended grade school in the coal camp of Insull, Harlan County, KY and then graduated from Blackstar High School, Alva, Harlan County, KY in 1940. She attended one-quarter of college at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Claiborne County, TN prior to her marriage to Robert in March 1941. Robert and Orene moved to Caryville, Campbell Country, TN after the marriage Robert worked at Sun Mountain Coal Company on Sun Mountain above Caryville where their two oldest children, Jerald and Bradley, were born.

In the early 1960s she graduated from the Pineville School of Practical Nursing (LPN) and passed the KY state boards with the highest score (812) ever recorded at that time. In 1971 she entered an 18 month program at Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital and became a Registered Nurse (RN), passing national boards with extremely high marks.

She worked from sun up to sun down raising her children, taking care of the house and finances, raising and canning from the garden for over 35 years, and providing care to patients who were in need of solace and comforting.

Heaven gained a new and bright star upon her passing.

In 2019 a conference room on the first floor of the Adron Doran University Center at Morehead State University was named the Robert and Orene Wright Rutherford Conference Room.
