Donald was the long prayed for, first born child of Don and Betty Taylor Armstrong. Eight years later, another little boy was added to the family and he was able to take his baby brother, Daniel, to school for show and tell.
Donald graduated from Chapel Hill High School in 1981. He attended Tyler Junior College for a short time but realized college wasn't for him. He began driving a truck for a local wholesale lumber yard. He was employed by PharAmerica (a supplier of pharmaceuticals to nursing homes) at the time of his death. He loved visiting with the residents during his deliveries.
The Armstrongs are a very musical family and Donald was no exception. Inspite of his short arms, he played the trombone in his high school band. He also had a beautiful singing voice. I loved it when he sang the old southern hymns a capella.
Donald had a great sense of humor and never took himself seriously. Those traits are what made him such a terrific dad. His reason for existing arrived on December 18, 1988 at 7:27 pm. Our daughter was several hours old by the time I was able to hold her. Not that there was anything wrong with Taylor; she was just Daddy's Little Girl from the moment she was born.
Donald and I divorced but never stopped loving one another. He was almost as excited when I gave birth to my son as he was the day that I had our daughter. Donald was referred to as "Uncle Donald" by Clay. "Uncle Donald" spent many an hour looking for, and many a dollar to buy, Clay a Tickle-Me-Elmo because that is all Clay wanted for Christmas that year.
There is not a day that goes by when I don't realize how blessed I am to have known Donald.
