Actor. Born in Dublin, his father was a singer, his mother was a ballet teacher, he was educated by the Christian Brothers and developed an interest for the stage at an early age. His first experience as a performer was with the Abbey Players. The versatile character actor with the recognizable mischievous smile and bushy eyebrows began appearing on British TV during the 1950s and made his mark in motion pictures with a string of impressionable roles in the films "Ulysses" (1967, as Leopold Bloom), "Romeo and Juliet" (1968, as Friar Laurence) and "Barbarella" (1968, as the villainous Durand-Durand). During this period, he made his Broadway debut in the play "Staircase" (1968) and went onto appear in several other productions. This led to him taking up residence in New York City during the mid 1970s. Other film credits include "The Verdict" (1982) in which he plays the biased Judge Hoyle who hinders Paul Newman's case and the Woody Allen picture "The Purple Rose of Cairo" (1985). His last television role was in the series "The West Wing" (2004).
