2nd Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he served as a Captain in the 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, British Army. In actions near Krugersdorp, South Africa, on July 11, 1900, Captain Younger volunteered to take out a party to recover a Royal Artillery wagon. He successfully dragged the artillery wagon under cover of a small kopje, through exposed a very heavy enemy fire at only 850 yards range. He also accompanied the second party of volunteers who went out to try and bring in one of the other guns. During that attempt he was mortally wounded, dying shortly afterwards. For leadership and gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross presented to his relatives by the King on August 8, 1902.
