Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. He received the award on June 21, 1859 for his actions as a lieutenant in the 26th Bengal Native Infantry of the British Indian Army on October 14, 1858 at Baroun, near Lusknow, British India during the Indian Mutiny of 1857. He was born in Madras, British India and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 26th Bengal Native Infantry. He remained in India following the end of the Indian Mutiny and achieved the rank of colonel. He died in Saugor (or Sagar), British India at the age of 52, while serving as the Deputy Conservator of Forests. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "26th Bengal Native Infantry. Lieutenant Hanson Chambers Taylor Jarrett, Date of Act of Bravery, 14th October, 1858. For an act of daring bravery at the village of Baroun, on the 14th of October, 1858, on an occasion when about 70 Sepoys were defending themselves in a brick building, the only approach to which was up a very narrow street, in having called on the men of his regiment to follow him, when, backed by only some four men, he made a dash at the narrow entrance, where, though a shower of balls was poured upon him, he pushed his way up to the wall of the house, and beating up the bayonets of the rebels with his sword, endeavoured to get in."
