Soviet Army General. He served in the Russian Revolutionary and Soviet-Finnish Wars. He is best known for heading the Russian defense of Stalingrad during World War II, commanding the 62nd Red Army division. After successfully halting the German advancement on Stalingrad, he was placed in charge of the Soviet counteroffensive, driving back the German Armies and capturing the German capital of Berlin in April 1945. Following the war he remained in Germany as commander of Soviet forces from 1949 to 1953 before accepting a senior military position in Kiev. In 1955 he was promoted to the rank of Marshall of the Soviet Union and served as commander of Soviet ground forces from 1960 to 1964. He was a two time recipient of the Hero of the Soviet Union award for his actions and contributions during the Second World War. He was the first Soviet general to be buried outside of Moscow at the site of the “Mother Russia” memorial located on a hillside overlooking the City of Volgograd (Formerly Stalingrad).
