Scientist and Inventor. Frank Carlyle graduated from Stanford University in 1927, obtaining a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1930. He worked for Marathon Paper Company in Wisconsin and later moved to Johnson and Johnson in 1947 in fabric research. While there, he refined the use of paper in the manufacturer of gowns, sheets, wipes and other traditionally cotton woven fabrics used in the medical field. He along with Billy Harper of Dow Chemical, developed and patented highly absorbent, disposable diaper products. He worked for Johnson and Johnson for twenty three years, retiring as Vice President of Research and holding thirty nine patents by 1970. Retiring to Provo, he joined the research department at Brigham Young University. While there, he established the Eyring Research Institute, one of Utah's first high tech companies. Their spinoffs include WordPerfect, Novell and Dynix. He also acted as consultant for Van Lear Corporation in Holland and held various leadership positions in the Mormon church. He died after a lengthy illness.
