His wife's tribute tells of a life well lived:
"Michael touched so many lives and shared himself with many a friend. The true and positive impact he had on people's lives is truly overwhelming."

Family, friends and colleagues are mourning the unexpected death of Mike McFarlan, husband, father, brother, uncle, colleague and friend. Only 48; Mike was a physical fitness man's man and the picture of perfect health when a heart attack took him from us way too soon.

A San Diego native he spent twenty years at Discount Tires before pursuing, his dream of becoming a Deputy. He joined the department in January 2008, at graduation he had the dual distinction of being 42 years old and making the academic dean's list. His first assignment was at the San Marcos station. Mike transferred to the Valley Center substation in December 2009, finding a home in the back county roads and mountains of San Diego. Valley Center colleagues said McFarlan was widely popular and an outstanding cop. When a Sheriff's vehicle was rolling toward you, the first thing you would do is look for the reflection of pink glasses - then you knew Mike was about to brighten your day. He will be missed by his co-workers and the Valley Center and Pauma Valley communities.

He leaves behind his wife Tamara of 22 years, triplet 15 year old sons and a 7 year old daughter. Family was everything to him and he constantly talked about his wife and kids.

Approximately 1,000 attended his memorial service that was held on October 4, 2013 at Sunridge Community Church in Temecula California. The Michael McFarlan Memorial Fund has been set up for his family by the Sheriff's association. Checks payable to the fund can be sent to the association at 13881 Danielson St., Poway, CA 92064.

Until we see you again Mike – this is not where it ends….
