His father was Robert Allen, a Toronto City Councillor and the first Riverdale Member of Provincial Parliament elected in Ontario history as a Liberal in 1934. Robert Allen's father-in-law, Randall McDonnell, was the Mayor of Mayo, Quebec for 13 years.
