US Congressman, US Senator. He was elected twice to represent New Jersey's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving first from 1883 to 1885, then from 1887 to 1889. After unsuccessfully running for governor in 1892, he was elected to the United States Senate, serving from 1889 to 1911. He was the great-grandson of South Carolina Continental Congressman John Kean (1756 to 1795), the brother of United States Senator Hamilton Fish Kean, the uncle of New Jersey Congressman Robert Hamilton Kean, and granduncle of New Jersey Governor Thomas H. Kean.
