Wisconsin Governor, Corporate Innovator. In 1901 he formed the Heil Company, pioneering the new metal joining process of welding which largely replaced riveting as the primary means of metal construction. The company grew into America's major manufacturers of dump and garbage trucks, storage and transport tanks, road building equipment, and home heating and cooling units. In 1938 he was the successful Republican nominee for Governor. Heil held office for two terms, 1939 to 1943. Defeated in 1942, he returned to his position as Heil Company's Chairman of the Board. He died after suffering a heart attack while hunting. Over time his company was reorganized into several different corporations, many of which are international leaders in their industries, including Heil Heating and Cooling, Heil Environmental Industries, Heil Trailer International, and Heil Europe.
