US Congressman. After graduating from Columbia College in 1808, he studied law and became an attorney in Essex, New York. He served in the War of 1812 as Second Lieutenant and Adjutant of the New York Militia's Thirty-seventh Infantry Regiment, taking part in the Battles of Boquet River and Plattsburg. Ross maintained his membership in the militia, eventually rising to the rank of Major General. In 1824 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as an Adams candidate and served one term, 1825 to 1827. He did not run for reelection and returned to his Essex law practice, maintaining a home he called "Hickory Hill." He was involved in various businesses, including operating a Lake Champlain ferry between Essex and Charlotte, Vermont. From 1847 to 1848 Ross served as Essex County Judge, and in 1848 he was a Whig presidential elector.
