He died as a result of injuries sustained from a rocket-propelled grenade explosion. Among his military awards and decorations were the Purple Heart; Bronze Star Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

He was predeceased by a brother, Jesse in 1984; his grandfather, Vernon F Flohr; and his grandmother, Jutta Flohr. He was survived by his mother and step-father; his 4-year-old daughter; a brother; and a sister.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 9, 2007, at the Second Baptist Church, South Hadley, MA. Interment on April 11, 2007.
