Born in Orense, Galicia, Valente graduated in 1953 from the University of Madrid and then moved to Oxford, where he taught Spanish Language and Literature. He first came to the attention of the literary world in 1954, when he won the Adonis Prize for Poetry with his book "A Modo de Esperanza". The themes of his poems are often exile, death, and poverty in Spain. His outstanding works also include "Poemas de Lázaro", "Breve Son", "Interior con Figuras", "Material Memoria", "Tres Lecciones de Tinieblas", "El Fulgor", and "Al Dios del Lugar". From 1958, Valente lived in Geneva, and between 1982 and 1985, he lived in Paris, where he ran UNESCO´s Spanish translation service. In 1988, Valente received the most prestigious Spanish Award, the "Premio Príncipe de Asturias". His works have been translated into French, English, Italian and German. He was posthumously given the National Literary Award for his lifetime achievement. He died in Geneva.
