Civil War Union Brigadier General. Appointed Colonel and commander of the 1st Maine Militia regiment at the outbreak of the war. Commanded his unit, which had a 3 month enlistment, during the Battle of First Bull Run, where it was held in reserve and saw no action. In September 1861 he was appointed to command the 5th Maine Volunteer Infantry, which he led in the 1862 Peninsular Campaign. At the June 27,1862 Battle of Gaines Mill, he was severely wounded. He returned to action at the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam before being promoted to Brigadier General, US Volunteers on September 24, 1862. During the Battle of Fredericksburg his brigade was stationed at Harper's Ferry, and he missed the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville due to an injury suffered din an accident. From the summer of 1864 to September 1864 he commanded the Union Army draft rendezvous on Riker's Island (and subsequently on Hart's Island) in the New York City Harbor. In September 1864, he was assigned to command a Division in William T. Sherman's Army when a vacancy in command was caused by the temporary incapacitation of Corps commander General James A. Mower. General Jackson led the division of General A.S. Williams (who had temporary command of the Corps) in the celebrated March to the Sea and the final Campaign in the Carolinas. After fighting at the Battle of Averasboro, General Mower returned to the Corps, and General Jackson was relieved of his command. On August 24, 1865 he was brevetted Major General, US Volunteers for his service, which lasted the entire length of the war.
