Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1853, and held the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the United States Regular Army Artillery at the start of the Civil War. However, he spent most of the War in a staff position in the United States Army Commissary of Subsistence. He was promoted up to Lieutenant Colonel, and served first as Chief Commissary of Subsistence for the Alexandria (Virginia) Army Depot, then as the Chief of the Washington, DC Depot. In that position he was responsible for the supplies for the thousands of soldiers assigned to defend the Nation's Capital. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on April 9, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious service in the Subsistence Department during the War". He remained in the Regular Army after the war, and retired with the rank of Colonel in 1892.
