US Marines landed on Iwo Jima on this date in 1945 in the most legendary battle in Marine Corps history. 25% of all Marines awarded the Medal of Honor in WWII did so on Iwo Jima. The battle also produced the most iconic photograph ever. The battle for the strategically important island sealed the fate of Japan in WWII. Japanese military considered the island to be impregnable. 25,000 US Marines proved otherwise.
