Hall of Fame Major League Baseball Player. Born in Cranston, Rhode Island, he was a brilliant defensive outfielder making his debut with the Chicago White Stockings on June 23, 1888. For seventeen seasons, he played with the Chicago White Stockings (1888-89), Chicago Pirates in 1890, Boston Reds in 1891, Boston Beaneaters (1892-1900), Milwaukee Brewers in 1901 and Philadelphia Phillies (1904-06). He hit .300 or higher for ten straight seasons and in 1894, he batted .438, while leading the National League in doubles with 50 and home runs with 18. He ended his career with a record of 2,307 hits, 1,545 runs scored, 106 homeruns, 1,302 runs batted in, a .326 batting average and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945. He died at age 87 in Boston, Massachusetts.
