Author, Feminist. She is known as "the first English feminist." She was the daughter of a merchant, who gave her a good education. At about twenty years old she left Newcastle and went to London, where she spent the remainder of her life. She wrote "A Serious Proposal to the Ladies", suggesting a scheme for the education and improvement of the female sex. In 1700, she wrote and published a book, entitled, "Reflections on Marriage," where she carried her arguments for the birthrights and privileges of her sex. She also wrote several political pamphlets. She died of breast cancer and was buried at Chelsea with the exact site being unknown. Her name is on a plaque inside the church.
