I hope you and my great-great grandfather, (Sgt Peter Beaver, 36th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Company A)were at least aware of each other's presence at the Battle of Reams Station, Aug 25, 1864. His brother (Thomas) also fought with you at Bull Run on August 28, 1862 (2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, Company H). He too was wounded, but became a POW, and died of his wounds from that battle. Thank you also for your courage in standing up for the 36th Wisconsin Regiment in rebutting A. Embler's (General Gibbon's) General Order #63 after hearing of it when you were released from Libby Prison. By personally seeing and presenting the true facts to President Abraham Lincoln your courage ensured an endorsement for an investigation from President Lincoln through Secretary of War, Stanton, which resulted in the colors being returned. For that, the descendents of the men of the 36th are forever grateful. Thank you for your outstanding service to our country.
