US Ambassador, University President. After serving two years as the first director of Vista, the domestic version of the Peace Corps, he was named by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 to serve as the ambassador to Kenya. When he returned to the United States in 1969 he was hired as the chancellor of Long Island University. From 1970 to 1973 he was president of Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and from 1973 to 1978 he was president of the University of Connecticut. He then began a five-year term as chief executive of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In 1983 he was named president of Lincoln Center in New York City, a job for which he had not applied but was hired for based on the recommendation of several board members. He resigned nine months later. He later served as president of the American University of Paris from 1992 to 1995. Cause of death: Prostate cancer.
