The son of William H. and Elizabeth Cox Maynor, Asa grew up in Russell County, Alabama. Judging from the 1850 census, he was probably born around 1845. He served in the Civil War, first as a private in AL 6th Infantry, Company F, and later as a sergeant in AL 6th Cavalry, Company G. He was wounded in the spring of 1865 when a minnie ball went through his left foot. Asa married Lucy Ann Brown of Mississippi. Their only child, Henry Clifton Maynor, died near Vernon (Madison County), Mississippi, in 1883 at age thirteen.
