SPRINGFIELD - Alfred "Stan" Catherwood, 86, of Springfield went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2008, at 1 a.m. from Menard Convalescent Center in Petersburg.
He was born Nov. 6, 1921, in Springfield, the son of John Hugh Catherwood and Dolly Hathaway Catherwood. He married Wilma Brown on July 14, 1951.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John "Jack" Catherwood and sister, Bonnie Pocock. Stan is survived by his wife, Wilma; son, Gary Catherwood (wife, Laura) of Springfield; and by his three grandchildren, Brian Catherwood (wife, Hannah), Curt Catherwood and Bethany Catherwood, all of Springfield.
He spent his younger years in Chester and moved back to Springfield where he joined the Navy and upon returning from World War II, worked at Fiatallis as a tool grinder foreman for many years. He also was a past member of the Sangamon County Board and an active lifelong member of Faith Bible Church (formerly Christian Bible Church).
Stan's minesweeper ship, the USS Tide, blew up on June 7, 1944, with many of its crew. He will be buried beside his father, a Medal of Honor recipient.
Visitation will be Thursday, Oct. 30, 2008, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Staab Funeral Home, S. Fifth St. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at Staab Funeral Home. Military honors burial service will be held at noon at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
His love for the Lord Jesus was a godly example to his family and friends who will miss him but are joyful in the promise that Stan is in heaven with his Savior at this very moment. Memorials may be made to Faith Bible Church (missions fund).
