Named after his father, he was known as "Junior" to everyone. He worked for the Indiana Highway Department until he was injured in an automobile accident shortly before his death.

He and his first wife Bessie had one daughter, Alice Mae, before they divorced and she moved away from Indiana. His second wife was Mildred "Micki" Leora Meer Bird. Together they had Earl Phillip Gregg Sr. and Junior claimed Micki's daughter from a previous relationship, Kelli, as his too. Junior and Alice Mae never seen each other after Junior and Bessie divorced. When Micki and Junior divorced, Micki left with Kelli and Junior raised Phil on his own until he met his soul mate, Veda May Cook Shepherd.

Veda had two sons of her own, Russell Shepherd and Robert Shepherd. Junior and Veda raised the three boys in a humble but loving home.

I remember Junior (my grandfather) best for the buzz cut he always had and that he and Grandma Veda lived along the Mississinewa River in Granville, Indiana with their closest neighbor being a quasi "militia man" and the property behind their house looked like a military bunker. Junior would sit in his recliner and close his eyes and pretend to be asleep. It was our "game" to see if I could sneak by him in that recliner. When he cracked an eye open and saw me out came the fly swatter for a gentle tap on the behind to let me know I got caught.

My grandpa was the most easy going, non-judgmental man I ever knew. I never knew him angry. He also always kept a small bottle of vodka tucked in his chair. Dark Eyes red label if my memory is right.

After he died, Alice Mae's daughter tracked my dad down through telephone records. She was trying to find her mother's dad. Sadly, Grandpa had died a few years before. My dad (Phil) asked all of his four children to go with him to meet Alice Mae, her husband Wes, and their daughter Brandi in Missouri. So we all did. When my dad met his sister for the first time I felt bad for him because all of us were looking and I knew he didn't want everyone seeing him cry. Dad and Alice Mae keep in touch, although nothing can make up for all the lost years. They now regularly come to Gregg reunions and all of Junior's extended family were excited to meet Alice Mae and her family.

I wish Junior would have lived to meet his daughter and other grandchildren. He would have absolutely adored them!

Junior left behind his wife Veda, children: Phil Gregg Sr. (wife Shirley Mae McMichael Gregg), Alice Mae Morgan (husband Wes Morgan), Karla "Kelli" Bird Gregg Holle Thull, Russell Shepherd (wife Angela) and Robert Shepherd. Grandchildren Crystal Gregg Smart Ingram Phillips (husband Shawn), Earl Phillip Gregg Jr (wife Renee), Joseph D.
