I am proud to call John my friend. He came to St.Louis in 1991 and he saw a magazine of mine called The 20 Greatest Teams that had a photo of him batting in the 1961 World Series.I told him that I would try to find copies of the magazine for him after he wanted my copy.It took several years to find some and I never forgot my promise.I contacted his wife,Nancy and she said he was playing golf,so I told her that the 4 magazines were in the mail. She called me back 3-4 days later and I could tell a difference in her voice and she said that John had a seizure on the golf course the day that I called and that he had his surgery that day she called me and that the magazines were a comfort to the kids during the surgery.I called john a few weeks later to see how he was and we bacame friends. He came to St.Louis in 2007 and I met him again.I gave him 6 tickets from his 1961 HR games and also gave him 2 wirephotos from the first 2 games at Boston when John had 4 consecutive at bats with a HR.He thanked me for the tickets and photos and hugged me several times because he was trying to see what sizes I wore so that he could send me something. He sent me his letterman's style jacket that the Yankees gave him for attending the 50th Anniversary of the Old-Timers Game at Yankee Stadium on 7/26/1996.I called him immediately and asked him why he sent me such a valuable gift.He said that he knew that I would appreciate the gift and wear it with pride. My wife was with me the day John came to St.Louis and I had John sign a Yankee stain glass piece that he made over and told her that she had such a unique and gifted talent. My wife also laughed when John tried to hug me several times because she realized he was looking for my clothes size and I didn't.I truly miss my friend and consider it an honor to have known him.RIP # 38 and thanks for the memories.
