If you grew up around a television set in the Twin Cities during the late fifties than you remember "Axel and His Dog" the most famous kids show in the history of local television. The show premiered on August 5th,1954 and ran for the next 12 years. The character of Axel became a local phenomenon. The television station sponsored an "Axel Day" at an amusement park and over 12,000 kids showed up to see their favorite television hero. Axel entertained children of all ages with riddles, zingers, and Knock-knock jokes sent in by the viewers. He used sound effects, Snorts, whistles, and a mangled Swedish accent. He soon became the hottest television personality in the Twin Cities. Also starting in the show was Don Stolz who played Towser the Dog and Tallulah the Cat. Few people knew that Clellan Card had Cancer. It was one of the saddest moments in the history of Twin Cities television on April 14th, 1966 when a co-star of the show told viewers Axel would not be returning to do the show: Card had died the day before of cancer.
